Issues : Errors in FE

b.

composition: Op. 23, Ballade in G minor

g3 in A

c4 in FE1

b3 in FE2, GE & EE

..

The version of A is most probably a Terzverschreibung, which would often happen to Chopin with a larger number of ledger lines – cf., e.g. the Polonaise in C minor, Op. 26 No. 1, b. 5 or the Concerto in F minor, Op. 21, II mov., b. 83. Chopin corrected it twice while proofreading FEFE1 includes c4, and it is only just FE2 and the remaining editions that include b3.

In FE (→GE), the staccato dots of the E and D bass crotchets were overlooked. They were added by EE.

b. 26-27

composition: Op. 23, Ballade in G minor

d2 tied in A & GE4

d2 repeated in FE (→EE,GE1GE1a,GE2GE3)

..

The tie sustaining in A the d2 minim to the next bar was misinterpreted in FE and in the majority of the editions based thereon as a beginning of the slur over b. 27-28. The mistake could have resulted from the tie having been written down unclearly, i.e. its middle part is most probably very poorly legible (on the available photograph, the fragment beginning the second, descending part of the tie is completely illegible). The tie was added by GE4, perhaps on the basis of a rhythmic analogy with the beginning of b. 29.

Staccato in A

       No marks in FE (→GE,EE)

..

In the main text we include the staccato dots under the octaves at the beginning of these bars, most probably overlooked by the engraver of FE (→GE,EE).
